  • Headaches

Headaches are a very common condition that most people will experience many times during their lives. The main symptom of a headache is a pain in your head or face. This can be throbbing, constant, sharp or dull. They fall into two main categories: primary and secondary headaches.

  • Muscle Pain

Myalgia is pain originating in the muscles of mastication and differs from TMJ pain in several ways. Myalgia is only loosely correlated with jaw function, whereas joint pain is a direct function of joint movement. Myalgia is typically delayed in onset. The muscle pain from myalgia is more diffuse and slowly waxes and wanes over time.

  • Nerve Pain

Neuralgia can result when these nerves are stimulated by compression, distortion, other forms of irritation, or lesions in the peripheral or central pathways. A common characteristic of this pain is a paroxysmal (very short-lasting), sharp, stabbing, or electric shock–like quality felt in the area innervated by the involved nerve and hence the so-called neuralgia.

  • Neuropathic Pain

There are many reasons why the trigeminal nerve may not be functioning properly, resulting in facial pain. Any injury, trauma, ENT surgery, or oral surgery could lead to injury of the trigeminal nerve. If you are experiencing sudden sharp facial pain after injury to the face or surgery, then you could be dealing with trigeminal neuropathic pain. If you also experience numbness and tingling, these are signs of nerve damage. You must turn to our team right away if you are experiencing these symptoms.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Over 18 million Americans are currently living with sleep apnea—a sleep disorder that causes breathing to stop or become shallow throughout the night, disrupting your natural sleep cycle. While many people may have this disorder and not even know it, this sleep problem can affect waking hours, as well. Those with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) will often experience excessive daytime sleepiness, problems concentrating, and morning headaches. If you’ve already been diagnosed with OSA, you may be looking for relief, so you can finally get a good night’s sleep. However, did you know that you can turn to our dentist and the team at YP Center for TMJ, Orofacial Pain, Headaches, and Sleep Medicine for help? You may be asking yourself: How are my dentist and my sleep disorder connected? Oftentimes, we can treat patients with OSA by simply fitting them with a custom-made oral appliance.

  • Orofacial Pain

Orofacial pain is more common than you might realize. In fact, we have quite a few patients that come to our Orange County, CA, practice dealing with recurring or persistent orofacial pain. Our dental team specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing the many causes of orofacial pain. One of the most common causes of orofacial pain that we see is temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

  • Sleep Disorders

Sleep-related breathing disorders are conditions of abnormal and difficult respiration during sleep, including chronic snoring and sleep apnea. Some sleep-related breathing disorders have limited health impact, but others can have serious consequences because of their potential effects on sleep and the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.

  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)

TMJ Symptoms Do you currently experience any of these symptoms? Jaw pain or soreness Aching pain around your ears Problems or pain when chewing A stiff or locked jaw joint that makes it hard to move your mouth Morning headaches (which is common in nighttime teeth grinders or jaw clenchers) Popping or clicking when opening or closing your jaws If you answered yes to any of these symptoms, then TMJ could be causing your pain and discomfort. However, keep in mind that sinus problems and even a toothache can manifest symptoms that mimic TMJ-related pain. The best way to find out whether you have TMJ or not is to see our Cypress, CA, dentist for a proper diagnosis.
